Volunteers honor veterans at final 2025 headstone cleaning in Hunterdon County

MILFORD BOROUGH, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — More than 20 volunteers gathered last Saturday morning for the final Veterans Headstone Cleaning event of 2025, held at Milford Union Cemetery in Milford Borough, according to Hunterdon County officials.

The event, hosted by Hunterdon County, took place from 10 a.m. to noon and brought together community members and families to honor local veterans through preservation and remembrance.

Commissioner and Veterans co-liaison Susan J. Soloway reflected on the program’s continued success.

“The outpouring of support for the ongoing headstone cleanings truly reflects the spirit of Hunterdon County,” Soloway said. “These events define the values of our community – respect, service, and remembrance. It’s inspiring to see people of all ages coming together, not just to clean a headstone, but to honor the sacrifices of our veterans in a meaningful way.”

The Veterans Headstone Cleaning Program began several years ago with the goal of ensuring that every veteran’s final resting place is treated with dignity and respect. The program not only restores aging and weathered headstones but also serves as a reminder of the service and sacrifice of the men and women who defended the nation.

Hunterdon County Veterans Service Officer Rich Booth highlighted the deeper meaning behind the effort.

“This is about more than just cleaning headstones. It’s about recognizing the sacrifices made by these men and women,” Booth said.

Since its inception, the program has led to the cleaning of nearly 1,500 veteran headstones across Hunterdon County.

Commissioner Soloway said the Board of County Commissioners plans to continue the program in 2026, with next year’s event dates to be announced early in the new year.
