Rabid raccoon found in Sussex County, officials urge residents to take precautions

WANTAGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A raccoon collected in Wantage Township has tested positive for rabies, township animal control officials said in a public notice issued this week.

According to Wantage Township Animal Control, the raccoon was collected on Dec. 15, 2025, near the intersection of Rose Morrow Road and Lott Road. Laboratory testing later confirmed the animal was positive for the rabies virus.

Rabies is a life-threatening viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. Officials said the virus is most commonly transmitted through the bite or saliva of an infected animal, and prompt medical attention and preventive measures are critical for public and animal safety.

Animal control officials emphasized that the presence of one rabid animal does not mean all wildlife in the area is infected. Residents were urged to be aware of signs of rabies in animals, which may include unusual or aggressive behavior, excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth, difficulty walking or paralysis, seizures, or wild animals appearing unusually friendly or active during daylight hours.

Officials also reminded residents to ensure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations, noting that vaccination is required by law and is essential for protecting both animals and people.

Residents are advised not to approach wild or stray animals, to closely monitor pets while outdoors, and to report any suspicious animal behavior immediately.

Anyone with concerns or questions can contact Wantage Township Animal Control at 973-875-9390. Non-emergency reports may also be directed to the New Jersey State Police at 973-383-1514.

Township officials said community safety remains a top priority.
