NJ State Police name Detective Sergeant Michael Gallant 2025 Trooper of the Year

WEST TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey State Police have named Detective Sgt. Michael Gallant as the recipient of the 2025 Trooper of the Year Award, citing his leadership in a multi-year investigation that dismantled the New Jersey faction of the Lucchese Crime Family.

Col. Patrick J. Callahan announced the honor Tuesday, recognizing Gallant, a member of the Official Corruption North Unit, for his role in leading a two-year investigation known as “La Cosa Nostra.” The probe targeted an illegal gambling and racketeering organization linked to the Lucchese crime syndicate.

Investigators uncovered a complex network of illicit activity that included underground poker clubs, back-room gambling operations hidden inside restaurants, a sophisticated online sportsbook and shell corporations used to launder illegal proceeds, state police said.

Under Gallant’s leadership, investigators used a range of techniques, including financial forensics and intelligence analysis, to stay ahead of the criminal organization. The investigation resulted in the execution of multiple search warrants across North Jersey, including at poker clubs in Totowa, Garfield and Woodland Park, a facility in Paterson and several residences.

The case led to the arrest and indictment of 42 alleged associates connected to the Lucchese criminal network. Evidence gathered during the investigation implicated several high-ranking figures, including George “The Neck” Zappola, Joseph “Big Joe” Perna, John Perna and Wayne Cross, authorities said.

“Bringing down a criminal network involved in illegal gambling and racketeering doesn’t happen overnight—it takes patience, precision, and unwavering commitment,” Callahan said. “This long-term investigation is a testament to DSG Gallant’s dedication, relentless work ethic, and attention to detail. His leadership throughout the case set the standard for what it means to serve with integrity and purpose. DSG Gallant’s remarkable efforts exemplify the New Jersey State Police’s core values of Honor, Duty, and Fidelity.”

The Trooper of the Year Award is the highest internal honor awarded by the New Jersey State Police. Each year, the division selects one or more enlisted members whose performance reflects exceptional service and professionalism. Recipients receive a red ribbon encased in a gold frame, which is worn on the Class A uniform.

State police officials said the honor recognizes outstanding performance and reflects credit on both the individual trooper and the division as a whole.
