Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike to close daytime for two weeks in West Milford

NEW JERSEY — The Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike is scheduled to be closed during daytime hours for about two weeks as a bridge replacement project continues in West Milford in Passaic County and Kinnelon Borough in Morris County, transportation officials said.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation said the ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/County Route 694 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, and will continue Monday through Saturday during the same hours through Feb. 14. The closure is part of ongoing work that began Jan. 19.

Officials said the closure is necessary to allow for demolition of the existing Route 23 bridge over the Pequannock River and Hamburg Turnpike. Work is being performed during daytime hours to avoid overnight noise that could disrupt nearby residents. Traffic on Route 23 itself will not be affected.

Motorists traveling through the area are advised to slow down, use caution and expect minor delays while the work is underway.

During the closure, drivers on Route 23 southbound seeking to reach Hamburg Turnpike, High Crest Road or Bloomingdale will be directed to continue south on Route 23, take the ramp toward Kinnelon and Butler, turn left onto Kinnelon Road/County Route 618, which becomes Kiel Avenue, turn left onto Park Place, and then turn right onto Main Street, which becomes Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694.

The work is part of a $78.2 million federally funded project to replace the Route 23 bridge over the Pequannock River, Hamburg Turnpike and nearby railroad tracks. The project also includes drainage and utility improvements along the corridor between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 at the border of West Milford in Passaic County and Butler and Kinnelon in Morris County.

Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2028. Officials noted that the schedule may change due to weather or other factors.

Drivers are encouraged to visit NJDOT’s traffic information website at 511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
