Lane, ramp closures begin Friday night on Route 31 southbound in Clinton for weeklong repairs

CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A lane closure and ramp detour are set to begin Friday night on Route 31 southbound in Hunterdon County as part of an ongoing road improvement project, state officials said.

Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, April 24 the left lane on Route 31 southbound will be closed from before Grayrock Road to just past the merge with the Interstate 78 eastbound Exit 17 ramp. The closure is scheduled to remain in place until 11:30 p.m. May 1.

In addition, the ramp from Route 31 southbound to I-78 eastbound will be closed during that time for drainage repairs, with detours in place.

Motorists traveling south on Route 31 and seeking to access I-78 eastbound will be directed to exit toward Annandale for a U-turn, then follow Beaver Avenue to rejoin the interstate. An alternate route allows drivers to continue south and use a jughandle to turn onto Route 31 northbound and access I-78 eastbound from there.

The closures are part of the $24.8 million federally funded Route 31 pavement reconstruction project between I-78/Route 22 and Grayrock Road.

The project includes replacing deteriorated concrete pavement, improving intersections, extending merge lanes and upgrading drainage, guiderails, lighting and signage. Bridge deck repairs are also planned.

Construction is expected to continue through fall 2026, officials said.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and check real-time updates at www.511nj.org, as schedules may change due to weather or other factors.
