Man dies after contacting catenary wire on NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex Line in Essex county

NEWARK, N.J. (Essex County) — An adult man died early Tuesday morning after coming into contact with an overhead catenary wire near NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex Line in Newark, authorities said.

At approximately 2:25 a.m., New Jersey Transit Police were alerted by local emergency medical personnel to an unresponsive man lying on the tracks near the Bathgate Place and 7th Avenue bridge crossing.

Responding officers and EMS personnel determined the man was deceased after coming into contact with the catenary wire, according to NJ Transit.

Preliminary findings indicate the man was not struck by a train, but was trespassing on the tracks when the incident occurred.

The incident briefly suspended service on the Morris & Essex Line while crews repaired the damaged catenary wire. Rail service has since resumed.
