Sussex County man sentenced in heroin distribution case tied to fatal overdose
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Newton man was sentenced Friday to probation after pleading guilty to drug distribution charges connected to a fatal overdose, authorities said.
Donovan Hornak, 55, was sentenced May 1 by Superior Court Judge Janine M. Allen to three years of probation, according to Sussex County Prosecutor Daniel M. Perez. The sentence was conditioned on 183 days in jail, which Hornak has already served and was credited for.
He was also ordered to submit a DNA sample and pay $1,380 in mandatory fees and penalties.
Hornak previously pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree distribution of heroin and fentanyl.
The charges stem from a New Jersey State Police investigation into the sale of heroin and fentanyl in the Branchville area in July 2024.
During his plea, Hornak admitted to distributing the drugs to an individual who later died from an overdose, authorities said.
