Sherrill signs order requiring NJ Transit to improve rider experience
NEW JERSEY — Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Tuesday signed an executive order directing NJ Transit to improve the commuter experience across its system.
The order requires transportation officials to develop a comprehensive plan within 45 days aimed at enhancing service, safety and reliability for riders.
“Every New Jerseyan deserves a transit system that is safe, clean, accessible, and reliable. This Executive Order is about delivering cleaner stations, clearer communication, and more dependable service across NJ TRANSIT. We are listening to riders, holding ourselves accountable, and making the improvements necessary to ensure that rail and bus transit work better for everyone who uses it,” said Governor Sherrill.
The plan will focus on several priority areas, including cleanliness at stations and on vehicles, accessibility of NJ Transit facilities, public safety measures such as lighting and cameras, and improvements to digital tools like real-time tracking on the agency’s website and mobile app.
“New Jersey residents deserve a world-class transit system and Governor Sherrill’s Executive Order is a clear demonstration of our shared commitment to improving the customer experience for all New Jersey Transit riders,” said NJ TRANSIT Chair and Acting NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain. The goals of the Executive Order and the focus on public engagement will help in moving our transportation system forward, and I look forward to working with NJ TRANSIT CEO and President Kris Kolluri in executing the Governor’s vision.”
To gather input, NJ Transit’s customer advocate will host three public listening sessions and launch an online survey. Feedback from those efforts will be reported within 30 days.
Following submission of the plan, NJ Transit is expected to begin implementing priority improvements within 45 days, with riders expected to see changes by June 22, officials said.
