Hopatcong officials deny social media reports of boroughwide water emergency
HOPATCONG BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — Borough officials are disputing social media reports claiming there is a water emergency in Hopatcong, saying the issue is limited to a repair project affecting two homes on Bell Avenue.
Administrator Ron Tappan said in a Facebook post Friday that the borough’s water system remains fully operational and there is no widespread disruption to water service.
“At this time, there is NO water emergency in Hopatcong,” Tappan said in a statement.
According to borough officials, the situation involves a roadway closure on Bell Avenue connected to a water line repair project impacting only two residences.
Tappan said the leak has already been identified and addressed, though a larger infrastructure repair is still required and remains ongoing.
“This is a significant repair project, and work will continue toward a full resolution,” Tappan said.
Officials stressed there are no additional homes without water service beyond the two directly affected properties.
“Residents should not panic or be misled by inaccurate information being shared online,” Tappan said.
The borough also pushed back against claims circulating on social media suggesting officials were not responding to the issue.
“Unfortunately, certain public comments and posts have attempted to portray this matter as a broader emergency or suggest that the Borough is not responding,” Tappan said. “That is simply not the case. Borough officials, water personnel, and emergency staff have been actively engaged and working on this matter since it was identified.”
The borough said future updates regarding infrastructure repairs and utilities will continue to be shared through official municipal communication channels.
