NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2027 grants aimed at improving safety and infrastructure at public-use general aviation airports across the state.

The application period for the state’s Airport Improvement Program is open through Oct. 9, NJDOT announced.

The program provides $4 million annually for projects that improve New Jersey’s public-use general aviation airports and aviation transportation system.

Grants are awarded through a competitive process administered by the NJDOT Division of Local Aid. Priority is given to projects that enhance safety, remove obstructions, rehabilitate existing facilities and equipment, and make capital improvements.

Over the past five years, NJDOT has invested more than $31.7 million in the state’s general aviation airports. Those investments have helped leverage an additional $38.1 million in federal grants and $5.2 million from airport owners, bringing the total investment in New Jersey’s general aviation airports and aeronautics infrastructure to $75 million, according to the department.

Airport Improvement Program grants may cover up to 90% of eligible project costs. Applicants may submit a maximum of two applications per fiscal year.

Applications are being accepted through the state’s online System for Administering Grants Electronically, known as SAGE.

NJDOT is also continuing to accept applications for Federal Aviation Administration matching grants. Under that program, NJDOT may provide up to half of the local match required for eligible FAA-funded projects.

The FAA currently provides up to 95% of eligible project funding, with the recipient airport responsible for the remaining amount.

Applications for the Fiscal Year 2027 Airport Improvement Program are due Oct. 9.
