Somerset and Hunterdon authorities urge sober driving ahead of Memorial Day weekend

Law enforcement agencies across Somerset and Hunterdon counties are urging motorists to avoid impaired driving during Memorial Day weekend as part of a national traffic safety campaign.

The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office joined the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety in reminding drivers of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The campaign message warns motorists: “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different.”

“Driving impaired is never acceptable. For some people, even the slightest indulgence is too much to drive safely. As everyone makes plans with friends and family this Memorial Day weekend, it is crucial to also plan for a safe ride home,” said Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald. “The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office is partnering with the NHTSA and the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to remind drivers that impaired driving is a choice, and it is unacceptable.”

Officials are encouraging residents to plan ahead before attending holiday gatherings where alcohol may be consumed. Authorities said drivers should arrange for a designated sober driver, taxi or rideshare service before drinking.

Law enforcement officials also urged residents to take proactive steps if they see someone attempting to drive while impaired, including taking away keys and helping arrange safe transportation.

Police agencies throughout Somerset and Hunterdon counties said officers will be conducting increased patrols during the holiday weekend to help keep roadways safe.

Authorities also reminded drivers to avoid distractions and remain alert behind the wheel.

“Drive 100% sober, because Buzzed Driving Is Impaired Driving,” the campaign states.
