Hunterdon County to celebrate America’s 250th with Declaration reading, concert and fireworks
FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County will continue its America 250 celebration on July 8 with a day of patriotic events, including a reenactment of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, a performance by the Hunterdon Symphony and a fireworks display at Deer Path Park.
The free, family-friendly celebration, hosted by the Hunterdon County 250th Celebration Committee, will begin at the Historic Hunterdon County Courthouse on Main Street in Flemington. In the event of severe weather, the festivities will be postponed to July 9.
Beginning at 2:30 p.m., a colonial rider on horseback will arrive at the courthouse steps before delivering the historic proclamation and reading the Declaration of Independence. The program also will feature remarks from Revolutionary War hero Ned Hector, who will speak about the lasting significance of freedom and liberty. The courthouse event is expected to conclude around 4 p.m.
The celebration will continue that evening at Deer Path Park, where the Hunterdon Symphony will perform patriotic music before a fireworks display commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Commissioner Shaun Van Doren, liaison to the Hunterdon County 250th Celebration Committee, encouraged residents and visitors to attend.
“As we continue celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, this event provides a wonderful opportunity for families, friends, and neighbors to come together in recognition of our nation’s history and the values that continue to unite us,” Van Doren said. “Hunterdon County played an important role during the Revolutionary War, and events like this allow us to celebrate that legacy while creating new memories for future generations.”
Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for the evening concert and fireworks.
“This celebration is about more than fireworks,” Van Doren added. “It is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices that secured our independence, appreciate the rich history of Hunterdon County, and celebrate the vibrant community we continue to build together as we look toward the future.”
The evening festivities will be held at Deer Path Park, 120 West Woodschurch Road, Flemington. Admission and parking are free.
