UDPATE: Driver suffers medical emergency before crashing van into Hunterdon apartment building, state police say

GLEN GARDNER BOROUGH, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A driver suffered a medical emergency before crashing a van into an apartment building Thursday morning in Glen Gardner, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Troopers responded at approximately 11:13 a.m. to 34 Main St. following reports of a motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle that struck a structure.

According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a Ford van was traveling north on Main Street when he experienced a medical emergency. The vehicle then traveled off the roadway to the left and crashed into an apartment building.

Emergency crews, including firefighters and rescue personnel, arrived to find the driver trapped inside the vehicle. The occupant was extricated within three minutes of rescuers arriving at the scene, according to the Glen Gardner Fire Company.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital, state police said.

A medical helicopter was requested, and emergency personnel established a landing zone to assist with patient transport.

Following the crash, the apartment building was evacuated and deemed unsafe, according to state police. Hunterdon County Urban Search and Rescue personnel responded to temporarily stabilize the structure until permanent repairs can be completed.

Officials said Main Street will remain closed to through traffic between Sanatorium Road and Hunt Place until further notice.

Additional agencies responding included South Branch Emergency Services, Hampton Fire Company, Hunterdon County Paramedics, the Hunterdon County Hazardous Materials Team, Hunterdon County Office of Emergency Management, Hunterdon County Urban Search and Rescue, and the New Jersey State Police.

The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information was immediately available.
