NORAD intercepts aircraft that violated restricted airspace near Bedminster
BEDMINSTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — NORAD fighter aircraft intercepted a general aviation aircraft Monday afternoon after it violated temporary restricted airspace near Bedminster, officials said.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command said F-16 fighter aircraft intercepted the civilian plane at approximately 3:55 p.m. June 8. The aircraft was safely escorted out of the area.
NORAD said the incident was followed by four additional temporary flight restriction violations, bringing the total number of unauthorized incursions into restricted airspace near Bedminster to 15 since Saturday.
Officials said pilots who are intercepted by NORAD aircraft should immediately tune to frequency 121.5 or 243.0 and reverse course until receiving additional instructions.
The Continental U.S. NORAD Region, based at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, is the operational lead for the mission.
More information about general aviation and temporary flight restrictions is available through NORAD.
