Warren County animal shelter seeks foster homes for 18 abandoned puppies

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — Common Sense for Animals is seeking foster homes for 18 mixed-breed puppies that were abandoned on a dead-end street in Rahway and recently taken in by the Franklin Township shelter.

The approximately 4-month-old puppies arrived at the shelter over the weekend, adding to an already overcrowded population at the nonprofit animal rescue, located at 2420 Route 57.

Because the puppies are part of an ongoing court case, they are not yet available for adoption. Shelter officials said they may need foster homes for anywhere from two weeks to two months or longer, depending on how the legal case progresses.

According to Common Sense for Animals, the puppies are friendly and affectionate but have had limited socialization. They are not housebroken and are just beginning to adjust to their new environment.

The puppies have received the first of three required vaccinations. Until they are fully vaccinated, they should not be taken to dog parks or off the foster family’s property. The shelter also asks that any resident dogs in foster homes be current on their vaccinations.

Officials said fostering provides the puppies with a safe, caring environment while helping ease overcrowding at the shelter. Families interested in fostering — or potentially fostering with the intention of adopting once the court case is resolved — are encouraged to apply.

For more information about fostering the puppies, contact Common Sense for Animals at 908-859-3060.
