Man charged with DWI, obstruction after Sussex County traffic stop

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) —A Vernon Township man was charged with driving while intoxicated and obstruction after police conducted a motor vehicle stop in Franklin Borough, authorities said.

According to police, Ernest Biggs, 60, was arrested May 8 after officers conducted a traffic stop and investigated him for driving under the influence.

During the investigation, police requested assistance from local emergency medical services. Authorities said Biggs became combative with EMTs and responding officers, physically interfering with their lawful duties.

Biggs was charged with driving while intoxicated, obstruction of governmental function, a disorderly persons offense, and related motor vehicle violations.

Police said Biggs was transported to a local medical facility for evaluation and treatment before being released pending an appearance in Franklin Borough Municipal Court in accordance with New Jersey’s Bail Reform Act.
