Design contract awarded for I-78 Toll Bridge pavement, drainage improvements

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission has awarded a design contract for a project to rehabilitate pavement and improve stormwater drainage along the Pennsylvania approach to the Interstate 78 Toll Bridge.

The commission awarded a contract to Arora and Associates, P.C., of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, at its June 29 meeting. The contract, valued at no more than $1,426,207.71, covers the design of improvements along the 2.25-mile section of Interstate 78 between the toll bridge and the Morgan Hill Road interchange (Exit 75) in Williams Township.

According to the commission, the design work includes plans to mill and repave all asphalt roadway surfaces in both directions of I-78 along the project corridor. The highway’s pavement was last rehabilitated in 2012.

The project also includes evaluating and designing pavement improvements for the I-78 Welcome Center’s access roads and parking areas, the commission’s maintenance facility parking areas and access roads, and the commission’s access driveway from Cedarville Road.

In addition, engineers will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the stormwater conveyance system, including an underground video inspection of drainage pipes, inlets and outlets. The review will identify any needed repairs or improvements to the drainage infrastructure.

Project design is expected to be completed in early 2027. Once finalized, the project will be advertised for competitive bids, with construction anticipated to take place next year.

The commission said all design and construction costs will be funded through toll revenue collected at its eight toll-supported bridges.
