HOPATCONG BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — Hopatcong Animal Control has confirmed that a bat found on Lackawanna Trail has tested positive for rabies, prompting officials to remind residents to avoid contact with bats and other wildlife and to seek immediate guidance if exposure is suspected.
Rabies is a viral disease that can be transmitted to humans and pets through bites or scratches from infected animals. Officials said anyone who believes they, a family member or a pet may have come into contact with the bat should seek medical or veterinary guidance immediately.
If a bat enters a home, residents are advised not to release it.
Instead, officials say to contact the Hopatcong Police Department immediately so Animal Control can safely capture the bat. If there has been potential contact with a person or pet, the bat may need to be tested for rabies. Releasing the bat could prevent health officials from determining whether post-exposure treatment is necessary.
Health officials also recommend that residents:
- Keep pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
- Avoid handling bats or other wild animals.
- Supervise children and teach them never to touch wildlife.
- Call the Hopatcong Police Department immediately if a bat is found in a room with a sleeping person, young child or someone unable to communicate, or if someone wakes up to find a bat in their room.
Officials said public cooperation is essential to protecting the health and safety of the community.
