Hunterdon County promotes Rutgers Master Gardeners program on dragonflies

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County officials are encouraging residents to learn more about dragonflies and their role in local ecosystems during an upcoming program presented by the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Hunterdon County.

“Discover the Amazing World of Dragonflies” is scheduled for Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Hunterdon County in Flemington.

The program will cover the life cycle of dragonflies, their habitat needs and their importance to local ecosystems. Participants will also learn how dragonflies can benefit gardens by helping control mosquito populations and how the insects can serve as indicators of healthy ecosystems.

“The Rutgers Master Gardeners provide valuable educational opportunities that connect our residents with gardening, conservation, and the natural world,” Hunterdon County Commissioner Deputy Director Jeff Kuhl said. “I encourage anyone interested in learning more about these remarkable insects to take advantage of this program.”

The presentation will also offer information on ways residents can create landscapes that provide suitable habitats for dragonflies and other beneficial wildlife.

A hands-on activity will follow the presentation, giving attendees an opportunity to put some of what they learned into practice.

The program is open to adults interested in gardening, nature, conservation or wildlife. Admission is $10 per person and includes light refreshments and workshop materials.

Advance registration is required and is available online through Rutgers.

The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Hunterdon County is a volunteer outreach program of Rutgers Cooperative Extension that provides research-based horticultural education and promotes environmental stewardship in the community.
