PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — A 56-year-old Blairstown Township man has been arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault and other offenses following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a child, according to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.
David L. James was arrested Friday, Aug. 28, and charged with one count of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, two counts of second-degree sexual assault and one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.
The investigation began Friday, July 3, when the Phillipsburg Police Department received information regarding the alleged sexual assault of a child. During the investigation, authorities identified James, who was known to the victim, as the suspect, according to the prosecutor’s office.
James is being held at the Warren County Correctional Center. A court hearing on the state’s motion for pretrial detention is expected next week.
The first-degree aggravated sexual assault charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in New Jersey State Prison, according to the prosecutor’s office. The second-degree charges each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison.
The investigation was conducted by the Phillipsburg Police Department and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.
