Congressman Kean introduces bill to prohibit taxpayer-funded first-class flights for members of Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Tom Kean Jr. has introduced legislation that would prohibit members of Congress from using official travel funds to pay for first-class or other flight accommodations above coach class.
Kean, R-N.J., introduced the No Taxpayer Funds for Congressional First Class Flights Act, H.R. 10244, on Thursday.
The legislation would prohibit members of Congress from using official travel funds for airline accommodations that are not coach class, according to Kean’s office.
“Public service should never be used for personal luxury, and taxpayers should not be footing the bill for Members of Congress to fly first class,” said Congressman Kean. “Every taxpayer dollar should be treated with respect and used responsibly. I am fighting to ensure that politicians put the public first and put an end to any kind of abuse that funds special privileges for elected officials.”
Kean, who represents New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, has also backed legislation aimed at restricting stock trading by members of Congress.
In July, Kean voted for the Stop Insider Trading Act, which would prohibit members of Congress, their spouses and dependent children from purchasing individual publicly traded stocks, according to his office.
