New Jersey American Water customers in 4 Warren County communities remain under boil water advisory

WARREN COUNTY, N.J. — A boil water advisory remains in effect for New Jersey American Water customers in four Warren County communities as crews continue repairs to a damaged water main.

As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, crews were continuing to repair the water main and expected the work to be completed within the next few days, according to New Jersey American Water.

The mandatory boil water advisory was issued Sunday night following a water main break near the intersection of North Lincoln Avenue and West Church Street in Washington Borough that caused a loss of water pressure.

The advisory affects customers in Franklin Township, Mansfield Township, Washington Borough and Washington Township.

New Jersey American Water said repair work was delayed while an underground gas line near the break was relocated so crews could safely begin repairs.

Most customers in the affected area have water service, but 36 customers near the broken water main remained without water as of Tuesday night. The utility is providing bottled water to those customers and said service will be restored as soon as repairs are completed.

The boil water advisory remains in effect for all affected customers. Water used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or preparing food should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and allowed to cool before use. Bottled water can also be used.

Customers should also discard uncooked food, beverages or ice made with tap water during the advisory. People should avoid swallowing water while showering or bathing, and pets should be given boiled and cooled water or bottled water.

New Jersey American Water said home water filters should not be used as a substitute for boiling water because most do not provide adequate protection from microorganisms.

The utility collected water quality samples Tuesday in areas where water service has been restored. Laboratory analysis typically takes 24 to 48 hours.

If testing confirms the water meets all quality standards, the boil water advisory will be lifted for customers outside the repair area.

Customers in the immediate repair area will remain under the advisory until repairs are completed, water service is restored and additional water quality samples are collected and analyzed to confirm the water meets all quality standards.

New Jersey American Water said it will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available. Customers with questions can contact the utility at 800-272-1325.
