Man accused of driving intoxicated with two children in car in Warren County
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — A 45-year-old Washington Township man was arrested last month after allegedly driving while intoxicated with two children in his vehicle, according to the Hackettstown Police Department.
On Sept. 19, police received a report of a possible intoxicated driver traveling into Hackettstown on Route 46. The caller reported that the driver, identified as Robert Hillegass, 45, of Washington Township, appeared to be intoxicated and had children in the vehicle, police said.
Officers located Hillegass and his vehicle in the CVS parking lot on Main Street.
Upon making contact with Hillegass, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and observed that his speech was slurred and he was trembling, police said. Two children were also found inside the vehicle.
Hillegass was asked to exit the vehicle and perform standardized field sobriety tests. During the tests, officers observed signs of impairment, and he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, police said.
Hillegass was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving, reckless driving and two counts of driving while intoxicated with a minor passenger.
Hillegass was later released to a responsible adult pending a court appearance.
