New outdoor fitness center opens at Sussex County Community College
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Sussex County officials and Sussex County Community College have announced the opening of a new outdoor fitness center designed to promote physical activity, improve access to exercise and support the health and wellness of students, county employees and community members.
The fitness center, which is located along College Hill Road on the upper SCCC campus, was developed through a partnership between the Sussex County Board of County Commissioners and the college, building on a longstanding relationship between the Sussex County Division of Senior Services and SCCC to provide programs and services for older adults.
County officials said the project grew out of discussions about expanding opportunities for physical activity and preventive wellness, particularly for county employees and community members who could benefit from accessible fitness facilities.
“I have been advocating for fitness programs for county employees and our community. When I learned about the National Fitness Campaign, I immediately brought the opportunity to Deputy County Administrator Lorraine Hentz, who partnered with SCCC President Corey Homer to help bring this vision to life. With the rising cost of health insurance, this is one proactive step we can take to help control costs while investing in the health and wellness of our employees and residents. I commend Corey Homer for his leadership and continued efforts to meet the needs of our community,” Commissioner Carney said.
The outdoor fitness center is open to students, employees and the public and is designed for individuals ages 14 and older. Its equipment and exercise stations accommodate a range of fitness levels and abilities, allowing participants to adapt workouts to their individual needs.
Visitors can also download the free Fitness Court App, which provides guided workouts, instructional videos, fitness challenges and other resources to help users make the most of the facility.
Sussex County plans to encourage its employees to use the fitness center and take advantage of preventive wellness benefits available through their health insurance plans. Officials said the initiative is intended to promote healthier habits, support preventive care and potentially help manage long-term health care costs.
The Sussex County Division of Senior Services also plans to coordinate outdoor fitness classes for older adults beginning in spring 2027, expanding the facility’s programming beyond individual workouts.
County officials said the partnership with SCCC reflects a broader effort to make fitness opportunities more accessible while encouraging healthier lifestyles throughout Sussex County.
