According to police, Kumar exhibited severe signs of impairment when officers approached the vehicle. He allegedly struggled to locate his driver’s license, was unable to stand without assistance and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

Police said Kumar’s balance was so severely impaired that officers determined it would be unsafe to conduct standard field sobriety tests at the scene.

Kumar was taken into custody without incident and transported to police headquarters for processing. Police said he failed to properly comply with instructions to provide a sufficient breath sample for an Alcotest.

Following the investigation, Kumar was charged with driving while intoxicated, consent to take breath samples and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

He was subsequently released to a family member pending a court appearance, police said.
