Bicyclist hit, killed while riding on Route 206 in Sussex County

SANDYSTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A bicyclist was killed in Sussex County after a crash involving a vehicle on Saturday afternoon, according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Jeffrey Lebron.

The crash happened at around 2:50 p.m. on Route 206 northbound at milepost 125.3 in Sandyston Township, Lebron said.

A preliminary police investigation revealed that a Nissan passenger vehicle, driven by Elizabeth Palacios Gotay, 21, from Bronx, NY, was traveling northbound on Route 206 and Damian Baranowski, 22, from Milford, PA was riding his bicycle northbound on the right shoulder when the Nissan entered the right shoulder and impacted the rear of the bicycle, Lebron said.

The Nissan then continued to travel northbound, veering off the roadway to the left, colliding with a utility pole, and overturning, Lebron said.

As a result of the crash, Baranowski sustained fatal injuries. Gotay sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital, Lebron said.

The crash remains under investigation and no additional information was available, Lebron said.
