Bill creating college internship program with state legislators clears committee
NEW JERSEY – College students participating in internships gain invaluable real-world experience that gives them a competitive advantage in the job market.
Acknowledging the educational and professional benefits for students, the Assembly State and Local Government Committee took the first step on Thursday toward establishing a legislative internship program.
The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman John Azzariti, would give hiring preferences to students from New Jersey.
“Learning outside a classroom by working in a lawmaker’s local district office gives students a unique opportunity to experience the inner workings of New Jersey’s legislative process. It also helps elected leaders maintain a fresh perspective on issues facing all generations,” Azzariti (R-Bergen) said.
Legislative offices can currently employ interns, but lawmakers must pay for them through their annual staff allocation. This bill (A3541) directs the state to fund the internship program using federal assistance and grants.
“The potential return on investment for New Jersey is high. We would keep more students in New Jersey, slow the brain drain and motivate more young people to consider careers in public service,” Azzariti said. “Early-career experiences mold future professional decisions.”
The internship program would be open to any full-time or part-time student attending any accredited institution of higher education in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, except for juris doctorate or Ph.D. programs.
