Bucco-secured funding to support new Lake Hopatcong Marine Station
LAKE HOPATCONG, N.J. — Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco announced that $2.5 million in state funding he secured is helping fund the construction of a new Lake Hopatcong Marine Station for the New Jersey State Police and local law enforcement agencies.
The new facility will serve as the primary hub for law enforcement operations and search-and-rescue missions on Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey’s largest freshwater lake and a popular destination for residents and visitors.
“Public safety has always been a top priority for me, especially on Lake Hopatcong, one of New Jersey’s most treasured recreational destinations,” said Sen. Bucco. “I’m pleased to see this funding now being put to work to bring these long-awaited improvements to fruition, ensuring our State Police and local law enforcement have the tools and support they need to protect boaters, respond to emergencies, and keep families safe while they enjoy spending time on the water.”
Supporters of the project said the current facility is outdated and no longer meets the operational needs of law enforcement personnel who patrol the lake.
“The rebuild of the NJSP Lake Hopatcong Marine Station is urgently needed,” said Marty Kane, chair of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation. “Originally opened as a bait shop some 70 years ago, the building was never intended as a police barracks. Even with some improvements over the years, it is woefully inadequate for the modern day needs of the troopers who serve New Jersey’s largest lake. Efforts led by Senator Bucco to bring about a modern and functional facility will have immediate and broad impacts on water safety and emergency response at Lake Hopatcong.”
The funding is part of Bucco’s ongoing efforts to support public safety and environmental stewardship at Lake Hopatcong.
Last year, Bucco secured a $250,000 grant for the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit to purchase two new boats aimed at enhancing boater safety and emergency response capabilities on the lake.
“Lake Hopatcong is a vital recreational and economic asset for our communities,” Sen. Bucco added. “Whether it’s enhancing boater safety or advancing efforts to protect and preserve its environmental health, I will continue fighting to ensure Lake Hopatcong remains safe, accessible, and well-maintained for generations to come.”
According to Bucco’s office, the project also continues a legacy of advocacy for Lake Hopatcong shared by the senator and his late father, former Sen. Anthony R. Bucco, who supported investments to modernize marine infrastructure and improve conditions on the lake.
Officials said the new marine station will provide law enforcement with updated facilities and resources to better serve the thousands of boaters and visitors who use Lake Hopatcong each year.
