Byram teacher Amy Stevens named Sussex County Teacher of the Year

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Amy Stevens, an English Language Arts teacher at Byram Intermediate School, has been named Sussex County Teacher of the Year.

Stevens, who earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Albright College and a master’s degree in instructional leadership from Centenary College, has taught English Language Arts in Byram since 1995. Known for her leadership and commitment to student success, she has served as a student council advisor, cheerleading coach, and 8th grade advisor, organizing major events such as the Washington, D.C., trip and graduation.

She has taken on numerous leadership roles, including 8th grade team leader, teacher mentor, writer of the language arts curriculum, and serving on the Climate, Culture, and School Safety Committee. She is also a grade-level representative for the Byram Education Association and an instructor of workshops for Ed Camps within the district.

A lifelong learner, Stevens regularly attends professional workshops and conferences, including Google trainings, the Annual Conference on Reading and Writing, and Innovative Designs for Education. She is a firm believer in the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and emphasizes that student success is greatest when teachers, parents, and students work as a team.

Her approach to teaching extends beyond classroom lessons to prepare students for life after school, encouraging them to be active, engaged community members.

Stevens was recognized as one of the top educators in the state Tuesday at The College of New Jersey.

“Congrats, Amy,” the district said in a statement celebrating her achievement.
