Byram Township swears in new police officer

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Byram Township Police Department welcomed its newest officer during a swearing-in ceremony held July 7 at the Byram Township Municipal Building.

Scott VanDyke took the oath of office before members of the Byram Township Council and will attend the 107th Basic Police Officer’s Class at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy. Upon graduation, he will become the department’s 39th police officer.

A lifelong Byram Township resident, VanDyke attended Byram Township schools, graduated from Lenape Valley Regional High School and studied criminal justice at Montclair State University.

Although beginning his law enforcement career, VanDyke brings prior public service experience as a member of the New Jersey National Guard. He deployed twice in 2024 in support of missions in Syria and Iraq.

According to the township, VanDyke was inspired to pursue law enforcement by his grandfather, who served as a police officer. He sought a career that would allow him to work directly with the public while promoting public safety and community engagement.

The township said VanDyke looks forward to continuing the department’s community policing efforts and serving Byram Township residents in a professional manner.
