Centenary University celebrates annual Blessing of the Animals
LONG VALLEY, N.J. (Morris County) — Centenary University welcomed students, staff, community members and their pets to its Equestrian Center in Long Valley on Thursday, Oct. 1, for its annual Blessing of the Animals.
The event brought together a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, a ferret and a pony, as participants gathered for the traditional blessing.
Centenary University President John Schol, who also serves as a United Methodist bishop, welcomed attendees and thanked them for participating in the event, a tradition the university recently revived after a brief hiatus.
University chaplain and Pastor Tim Nicinski led the ceremony, offering blessings for the animals.
Rockwell, a horse from Centenary’s herd, represented the university’s equine community, including the horses that support its nationally recognized equestrian programs.
“The Blessing of the Animals reflects St. Francis’ commitment and deep respect for all life, including animals,” said Nicinski. “At Centenary University, well known for its equestrian team and dedicated care of its horses, we encourage our students and the surrounding community to offer the same respect to their animals and pets and to continue the purpose of good stewardship in nature, life, and the environment.”
According to university officials, the Blessing of the Animals reflects Centenary’s commitment to community, compassion and responsible stewardship while recognizing the important role animals play in the lives of students, families and the surrounding community.
