Red Cross urges blood donations amid summer drop in supply; type O most needed

NEW JERSEY — The American Red Cross is calling on eligible donors to give blood or platelets this month to help maintain a stable blood supply during the summer, when donations often dip and the need remains constant—especially for type O blood.

The Red Cross emphasized that summer holidays, increased travel, and severe weather events can all disrupt blood collection efforts, making consistent donations critical to meet patient needs, including trauma victims who may require multiple transfusions.

“Donations tend to drop during the summer, but the need doesn’t,” the organization said in a statement. “Type O blood products are especially important and often in short supply on hospital shelves.”

To encourage participation, the Red Cross is offering a series of thank-you gifts:

  • Now through July 14, donors will receive a pair of limited-edition Red Cross x goodr sunglasses, while supplies last. The sunglasses come with a customizable blood type sticker.
  • From July 15 to July 31, donors will receive a Fandango Movie Reward by email to enjoy a summer film on behalf of the Red Cross.

All blood types are needed, and those unsure of their type can learn it after donating. Appointments can be made at RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

Eligible donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed), weigh at least 110 pounds, and meet other eligibility requirements. High school students and younger donors under 19 must also meet specific height and weight criteria.

Donors can also save time by completing a RapidPass® on the day of their appointment, which allows them to complete the pre-donation health screening online. Instructions are available at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass.

The Red Cross urges individuals to schedule and keep appointments to ensure a stable supply of blood and platelets is available for those in need throughout the summer.
