Chester Township police warn residents of permit payment email scam

CHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Police are warning residents and local businesses about a scam involving fraudulent emails requesting payment for permits or applications.

According to the Chester Township Police Department, the scam has recently been reported in nearby communities and involves emails that appear to come from a township office. The messages may use email addresses that look similar to legitimate municipal addresses to appear official.

Police said the emails typically ask recipients to send payment for permits or applications and may demand payment through wire transfers, Green Dot cards or other unusual methods.

Authorities emphasized that municipal offices and the police department do not request payments through those methods and do not demand immediate payment through email.

Residents who receive such requests are advised not to respond or send money.

Police said anyone who receives a suspicious email or phone call requesting payment should contact the Chester Township Police Department at 908-879-5514 to verify whether the request is legitimate.
