Coast Guard rescues 3 mariners after boat starts sinking off New Jersey coast

NEW JERSEY – A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew and helicopter aircrew rescued three mariners after a 74-foot pleasure craft began taking on water about 4 nautical miles northeast of Shark River Inlet early Saturday, the Coast Guard said.

A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City responded after watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received a report at about 4 a.m. from Monmouth County Dispatch, officials said.

The boat crew recovered the three mariners from their semi-submerged vessel and transported them to Manasquan Inlet, where emergency services were waiting, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard pollution responders were working with partners to develop a salvage plan for the vessel, officials said. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
