Commissioner Van Doren, Congressman Kean tour Hunterdon County Senior Center
“Review Planned Improvements As Part Of FY25 Appropriation Request”
HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – Commissioner Shaun C. Van Doren, who serves as the liaison to the Department of Human Services, last week welcomed Congressman Tom Kean Jr., to meet with seniors and tour the Hunterdon County Senior Center, to review areas of planned improvements that were requested and sponsored by Congressman Kean as part of FY25 Community Project Appropriation process.
“The Hunterdon County Senior Center is seeing a record number of participants, and we appreciate Congressman Kean’s quick action with working with the Commissioners to pull together a funding strategy to provide for expanded programming space and ADA improvements,” Van Doren said.
The planned improvements to the Senior Center building, located at the Route 31 County Complex, on Gauntt Place, in Flemington, would include converting the former Public Health Nursing Offices on the lower level of Building #2 into a flex space for senior programming.
The county also intends to install and new entranceway to connect Buildings #1 and #2, complete with a new elevator in Building #2. Estimated renovation costs are proposed at just over $2 million dollars and will have a stakeholder involvement in the process of redesigning the lower level of Building #2.
“Seniors deserve well-resourced senior centers that offer opportunities and support services to help them stay active, engaged, and connected to their communities,” Kean said. “In this year’s appropriations process, I requested $2,000,000 in funding for Hunterdon County to support the expansion of their senior center care. This investment will help ensure that we continue to support our seniors thrive in our neighborhoods.”
Congressman Kean secured the $24 million in Community Project Funding for the fiscal year 2024, distributing it across thirteen Community Projects spanning all six counties within New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District. Community Project Funding is a process that allows members of Congress to request direct funding for projects that benefit the communities they represent. Each member may submit up to fifteen projects.
“The Commissioner Board is grateful for Congressman Kean’s tireless work on behalf of our seniors, including working to help secure important federal funds to modernize the Hunterdon County Senior Center to meet today’s diverse programming needs,” Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl said.
