Dr. Cory Homer appointed president of Sussex County Community College
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Community College Board of Trustees has unanimously appointed Dr. Cory Homer as the next president of the college, following his service as interim president since January 2025.
Dr. Homer, a longtime SCCC administrator, began his career at the college in 2014 as associate director of institutional research. He later earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Grand Canyon University in 2021, focusing on the integration of psychology, technology, and learning.
Over the past decade, Dr. Homer has held several key leadership positions at the college, most recently serving as vice president of student success and institutional effectiveness. In that role, he led initiatives that contributed to sustained enrollment growth, including a 6% increase in full-time equivalent enrollment and a 3% increase in total headcount in spring 2025 compared to the previous year. SCCC has now seen four consecutive semesters of enrollment gains.
During his interim presidency, Dr. Homer oversaw a range of initiatives, including the expansion of dual-credit and career pathway programs with local high schools, construction of the Optics Technology Center, renovation of the Library & Learning Commons, and enhancements to the Adult Transition Center and technical labs. He also implemented new student services and froze tuition for the 2025–2026 academic year to help families manage college costs.
“Dr. Homer’s student-centered leadership has not only stabilized enrollment but also elevated the college’s reputation for access and excellence,” said Herb Yardley, chair of the SCCC Board of Trustees. “He is a trusted leader with a clear vision for the future of the college.”
Dr. Homer also represents SCCC nationally through his work on the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships Research Commission and has served as a peer evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
A native of Matamoras, Pennsylvania, Dr. Homer is actively involved in public service. He serves as mayor of Matamoras, vice president and dive captain of the Westfall Township Volunteer Fire Department, and is a past president of the Delaware Valley School District Board of Education.
“I am honored by the board’s confidence in me,” Homer said. “It’s a privilege to serve a college so deeply rooted in student success and community impact. I look forward to continuing our mission of providing accessible, affordable, and forward-thinking education for Sussex County and beyond.”
