Erratic driver complaint leads to DWI arrest in Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Colorado man is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated after allegedly operating his vehicle erratically in Byram Township.

On April 19, police received a report of an erratic driver who was failing to maintain their lane of travel. While responding, an officer observed a black Dodge van failing to maintain its lane on Route 206, according to police.

A motor vehicle stop was initiated, and upon speaking with the driver—identified as Kenneth C. Bitten, 68, of Monte Vista, Colorado—the officer suspected he might be intoxicated. Bitten was asked to perform several standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said.

Bitten was arrested and transported to the Byram Township Police Station, where he consented to and failed two breath tests, police said.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, and careless driving. Bitten was released to a family member pending a court appearance.
