Five-vehicle crash on I-78 in Union County leaves one dead

UNION TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Union County) — A Harrison man was killed and two others were injured in a five-vehicle crash Thursday evening on Interstate 78 in Union County, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Troopers responded at approximately 5:58 p.m. to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 near milepost 52.3 in Union Township.

According to a preliminary investigation, an International box truck, Nissan SUV, GMC SUV, Jeep SUV and Honda passenger vehicle were all traveling east when the crash occurred.

State police said the box truck struck the rear of the Nissan SUV. The impact caused a chain-reaction collision in which the Nissan struck the GMC, the GMC struck the Jeep and the Jeep struck the Honda.

Victor R. Fajardo, 44, of Harrison, was a rear-seat passenger in the Honda and suffered fatal injuries in the crash, police said.

The driver of the Nissan sustained moderate injuries, while the driver of the Honda suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

No additional injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation, and no further information was immediately available.
