Former Hackettstown Councilman and County College of Morris Professor Joseph M. Bristow passes away at 83

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – Joseph M. Bristow, a beloved educator, community leader, and man of faith, passed away on January 28, at the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice in Fredon Township. He was 83.

Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on March 23, 1941, Joseph’s life was marked by a deep commitment to service, education, and his community.

A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Joseph earned a Bachelor’s degree followed by a Master’s degree from Villanova University. He also pursued doctoral courses at the New School for Social Research, reflecting his lifelong dedication to learning. Joseph spent over four decades as a professor at County College of Morris (CCM), where his passion for teaching and his belief in the transformative power of education inspired generations of students.

Outside the classroom, Joseph was a dedicated public servant and an active member of his community. He served as a Hackettstown Councilman, a member of the Hackettstown Board of Adjustment, and as a member of the Hackettstown Library Board. He also played a pivotal role in crime prevention efforts, co-founding the Hackettstown Committee for Crime Prevention (the DARE program). Additionally, Joseph was a devoted Little League coach, instilling values of teamwork and perseverance in young athletes.

Faith was at the core of Joseph’s life. A committed member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he was an active participant in the United Methodist Men’s group, where his belief in the power of community and spirituality shaped his service to others.

Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Stasia and John Bristow, his brother, Matthew, and his daughter-in-law, Kathy Bristow. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, with whom he shared a loving marriage of 64 years. Together, they raised three children: Joseph and his wife, Camille, of Lebanon, NJ; Laurie Wear of Kearneysville, WV; and Thomas Bristow of Upperco, MD. Joseph is also survived by his sister, Eileen Molloy, of Bristol, RI; his sister-in-law, Janet Bristow, of Farmington, CT; four grandchildren: Taylor Mason and her husband, Michael; Joseph Wear; Lauren Coviello and her husband, Paul; and Jessica Bristow and her wife, Jacque; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Joseph’s legacy of kindness, service, and dedication to his community will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a future date.
