Former Morris and Bergen teacher faces new sexual assault charges

NEW JERSEY – A former Westwood Regional School District and Morris Hills Regional District teacher was arrested on Wednesday on new sexual assault charges, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

Kurt Zimmermann, 55, of Rockaway was arrested on March 13 and charged with three counts of second-degree sexual assault.

The additional charges are from an investigation that began on Feb. 23 after the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit was contacted in Jan. 2024 by the Hopatcong Borough Police Department regarding alleged sexual conduct between a teacher and a student in Westwood, Musella said.

The investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Zimmermann, while previously employed by the Westwood Regional School District as the Director of Bands, allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with a juvenile student between the ages of 13 and 17 on more than one occasion, Musella said.

The sexual conduct, which occurred in the past, was determined to have taken place at Westwood Regional Middle School in Westwood and at Westwood Regional High School in Washington Township, Musella said.

The ongoing investigation revealed a second victim and detectives determined that Zimmermann, while employed as a teacher at Morris Hills Regional District in Rockaway, allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with a juvenile student who was at least 16 years of age but under the age of 18. The sexual conduct occurred in the past, Musella said.

Zimmermann was charged and then remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, Musella said.
