GoFundMe launched after Sussex County house fire

HOPATCONG BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — A GoFundMe fundraiser has been started to assist a Hopatcong family following a house fire earlier this week that displaced residents and prompted a multi-agency response, authorities said.

Police said patrol units were dispatched April 21 to Greenwood Avenue for a reported possible structure fire. Upon arrival, officers observed active flames coming from the right side of the residence.

The homeowner told officers that all occupants and a dog had safely exited the home, though a family cat remained inside.

The Hopatcong Fire Department arrived shortly after and took command of the scene, with assistance from mutual aid departments. Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters later located the missing cat inside the home and safely removed it. The animal was placed in a carrier and returned to the family.

Officials credited the coordinated response of multiple agencies for ensuring the safety of both residents and pets. A GoFundMe fundraiser has since been launched to help the family recover.
