WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer Wednesday joined with Members of Congress to remember the 17 victims, 14 students and 3 staff members, of the Parkland school shooting.
On the anniversary of the Parkland school shooting, there were three mass shootings which left at least three people killed and 27 injured in Kansas City, Missouri, Claxton, Georgia, and Atlanta, Georgia. In Kansas City, the deadliest of yesterday’s shootings, shots broke out when families and children were celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl.
Alongside parents of the Parkland school shooting victims, Gottheimer is working to pass the bipartisan Alyssa’s Legacy Youth in School Safety Alert (ALYSSA) Act to require silent panic alarms in schools nationwide.
Additionally, they’re working to pass the bipartisan Strengthening Our Schools (SOS) Act to increase investment in more well-trained School Resource Officers so that every school has a first responder already on the campus in the event of a critical incident.
“There are no words to describe the loss of our children’s lives and their educators at senseless school shootings. I will never forget the lives lost at Parkland six years ago and will never stop working in Congress to pass common sense gun & school safety legislation to combat gun violence and ensure our most precious resource — our children — are safe,” Gottheimer said. “There have already been more than 49 mass shootings this year — that’s more than the number of days we’ve had in the year. And 656 last year. Moms. Dads. Sons and daughters. Lives cut short. Families torn apart.”
