Gottheimer reunites family with long-lost WWI medals of veteran Savos Loukides

U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) on Monday reunited the family of the late World War I veteran Savos Loukides with military honors earned more than a century ago, including a long-lost Purple Heart, a World War I Victory Medal, and a Victory Button.

Gottheimer also presented the Loukides family with an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in Savos Loukides’ honor.

The medals and flag were given to Savos Loukides’ son and daughter-in-law, Gus and Susan Loukides of Montvale, during a presentation recognizing the veteran’s service and sacrifice.

“One of the biggest honors of my job is to help veterans like Savos Loukides and their families get the recognition they’ve rightfully earned for giving so much to our country,” said Gottheimer. “Savos’ story is an incredible American one. He was an immigrant who enlisted in World War I, was shot and gassed with chemical weapons in service to our country, and then came home, built a business, and raised a family.”

Savos Loukides immigrated to the United States from Turkey before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served with the 309th Infantry and took part in five campaigns in France during World War I. He was wounded by chemical weapons and gunfire during his service and was honorably discharged due to his injuries.

Following his military service, Loukides settled in Paterson, and became a local business owner.

Gottheimer emphasized the importance of honoring veterans for their sacrifice: “After they’ve fought for us, to protect our great flag and country, we must fight to ensure they get the honor and recognition they deserve.”
