Gottheimer urges NJ Board of Public Utilities to reverse recent rate hikes

NEW JERSEY — U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) Tuesday sent a letter to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) following their recent decision to approve a rate increase upwards of 20 percent set to take effect in June.

“Just months after announcing a rate hike in November, the Board of Public Utilities is whacking families with another increase upwards of $330 per year,” said Gottheimer. “This is outrageous, especially as families are already struggling with high food and housing costs. We have to give hardworking families a break — that’s why I’ve introduced legislation to help provide relief to help offset rising energy costs and improve transparency surrounding rate hikes. I’ll never stop fighting so Jersey families can keep more of their hard-earned money.”

Last week, the BPU announced that many New Jersey residents are likely to see higher electric bills starting on June 1.

The rate hike will affect customers of utilities across the state, with average Atlantic City Electric customers paying an extra $28 per month ($336 per year), JCP&L customers paying an extra $22 per month ($264 per year), PSE&G customers paying $26 per month ($312 per year), and Rockland Electric customers paying $25 per month ($300 per year)
