Gov. Murphy announces $250M in higher education capital grants for New Jersey colleges
TRENTON, N.J. — Gov. Phil Murphy and Secretary of Higher Education Brian Bridges on Monday announced $250 million in state-backed grant funding for public and private colleges and universities to support campus facility improvements.
The funding, made available through the Higher Education Capital Improvement Fund and the Higher Education Facilities Trust Fund, will be used for projects that officials said will promote student success and campus safety. Eligible institutions may apply for grants to renovate, repair, expand or construct facilities, as well as upgrade technology infrastructure.
“By leveraging the state’s bonding capacity, we’re helping institutions address critical repairs and improvement projects and reinforcing their role as engines of opportunity and economic growth,” Murphy said in a statement.
Of the total funding, $110 million will be distributed through the Capital Improvement Fund and $140 million through the Facilities Trust Fund. A portion will be reserved for deferred maintenance and other capital needs at New Jersey City University, as required under recently enacted state law.
Officials said the grants are intended to build on nearly $400 million in funding awarded for higher education capital projects in 2023. Applications are due Sept. 22, and final project awards must be approved by the Legislature before bonds are issued by the New Jersey Educational Facilities Authority
