Gov. Sherrill unveils NJ TRANSIT action plan, announces redesigned mobile app

NEW JERSEY — Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced a new NJ TRANSIT Rapid Action Plan on Monday outlining systemwide initiatives aimed at improving customer experience through upgrades focused on cleanliness, accessibility, public safety and digital technology.

The plan also includes the launch of a redesigned NJ TRANSIT mobile app and expanded real-time transit tracking tools.

According to state officials, the Rapid Action Plan calls for cleaner buses and trains, upgraded stations, expanded Wi-Fi access, enhanced safety measures and improvements to customer communication systems.

“New Jerseyans deserve a transit system that is clean, safe, reliable, and easy to use,” said Governor Mikie Sherrill. “NJ TRANSIT’s Rapid Action Plan is an immediate commitment to enhance the customer experience. No one wants to ride home on a dirty bus. No one wants to feel unsafe on their train. And no one wants to use an outdated and confusing app that makes it impossible to plan your trip. By prioritizing accessibility, safety, cleaner vehicles and facilities, and upgraded digital technology, this plan addresses the needs of everyone who uses the system.”

The plan was developed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and NJ TRANSIT following Executive Order No. 16, issued March 24, directing officials to create the strategy within 45 days.

“The Rapid Action Plan is a direct product of Governor Sherrill’s vision for an improved experience for NJ TRANSIT customers and ridership,” NJDOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Chair Priya Jain said. “Informed by our residents and customers directly, the plan represents tangible actions that will be taken to improve the accessibility, safety, cleanliness and technology of our stations, trains, and buses across the entire public transportation system. NJ TRANSIT is firmly committed to improving the day-to-day experience of every customer served, and the Rapid Action Plan represents a clear foundation for our commitment.”

NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri said the plan combines immediate improvements with long-term infrastructure investments.

“The Rapid Action Plan reflects a systemwide commitment to all NJ TRANSIT customers. We appreciate Governor Sherrill’s clear focus on delivering immediate improvements that customers can see and feel,” Kolluri said. “By combining near-term, customer-focused actions with continued long-term investments in infrastructure and equipment, we are strengthening both the reliability of our system and the overall travel experience for the hundreds of thousands of customers who rely on NJ TRANSIT every day.”

The plan is organized around four primary focus areas: digital experience, cleanliness, accessibility and public safety.

Digital initiatives include expansion of Wi-Fi service across buses, improvements to the MyBus and MyLightRail systems, modernization of NJ TRANSIT’s website and customer displays, and the rollout of NJT LiveView, a GPS-based real-time train and light rail tracking platform.

Officials said the redesigned mobile app was accelerated in response to customer feedback and the governor’s directive.

The plan also includes expanded station cleaning programs, improvements to elevators and escalators, upgraded signage for riders with disabilities and the creation of a Real Time Crime Center aimed at enhancing security and coordination across the transit network.

State officials said the Rapid Action Plan will be funded through NJ TRANSIT’s existing budget without additional state appropriations during the 2027 budget cycle.

NJ TRANSIT has already begun implementing portions of the plan and expects priority initiatives to advance within 45 days.

Officials also noted the agency continues work on major infrastructure projects, including the Portal North Bridge and the delivery of new railcars and buses intended to improve long-term service reliability.
