Hackettstown High School launches first girls flag football team in Warren County

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — Hackettstown High School is making history this spring with the launch of its first girls flag football team, the first such program in Warren County, according to coach Chris Cavanagh.

The new team gives female student-athletes the opportunity to compete in one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the country, reflecting a broader push for expanded athletic opportunities and gender equity.

The program includes students in grades 9 through 12 and has already generated excitement across the school and local community. Players have been training and learning the fundamentals of the game as they prepare for their inaugural season, which began in late March.

Hackettstown opened its season March 27 against Montville, falling 31-0. The team later made history again on Thursday, April 2, when freshman running back Morgan Kewer scored the program’s first touchdown in a game against Indian Hills. Hackettstown lost that game 12-7.

The team is set to host its first home game Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Morrison Field against Morristown.

Officials said the addition of girls flag football aligns with a growing national trend, as schools and athletic organizations expand opportunities for female athletes.

The program is expected to help students build leadership skills, teamwork and confidence, while also inspiring younger athletes in the district.
