Hackettstown TFC JV Girls Flag Football Team wins first MCYFL Championship, making history for Warren County
The championship victory marks the first time a Warren County girls flag football team has won a Morris County Youth Football League title.
HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – The Hackettstown Tiger Football Club’s (TFC) Junior Varsity (JV) Girls Flag Football Team won their first Morris County Youth Football League (MCYFL) Championship last month, defeating the Mount Olive JV team 14-13 in their second season.
This marked the first time a Warren County Girls Flag Football team has won a championship.
The JV team is composed of 22 girls (grades 3-5) from Hackettstown, Independence Township, Liberty Township, Allamuchy Township, Green Township, and Washington Township (Morris County).
In their inaugural season in 2023, the JV team made it to the playoffs but suffered a loss in the semifinals.
When asked about winning the championship, TFC’s JV Head Coach Dustin Petronaci told RNJ, “Winning the championship feels incredible—it’s the result of hard work, teamwork, and growth. I’m so proud of these girls and everything they’ve accomplished. It’s inspiring to see how far the sport has come, and we’re proud to be part of that movement.”
The TFC had two Varsity teams this year. In their inaugural season in 2023, both teams qualified for the playoffs; however, both were defeated in the semifinals. This year, one of the two teams qualified for the MCYFL playoffs but was again defeated in the semifinals.
In total, the two Varsity teams were comprised of 33 girls (grades 6-8) from Hackettstown, Independence Township, Liberty Township, Allamuchy Township, Green Township, and Washington Township (Morris County).
Currently, Mount Olive and Jefferson Townships are the only local high school programs for Girls Flag Football. The hope is that Hackettstown High School will establish a Girls Flag Football program in the near future, allowing these athletes to continue playing in high school.
Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, according to the NFL. In 2028, flag football will become an Olympic sport, with women’s flag football included in the Olympic Games.
It’s inspiring to see these hardworking young ladies grow as they learn a new sport, often playing other sports during the same season, while also contributing to their community by fundraising for their sport and other great causes!
