Hanover Wind Symphony to present free ‘Dance On’ concert in Morris County

WHIPPANY, N.J. (Morris County) — The Hanover Wind Symphony, celebrating 40 years of performances, will present a free concert of dance music titled Dance On at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Memorial Junior School, 61 Highland Ave.

The toe-tapping program will feature this year’s Hanover Wind Symphony (HWS) scholarship winner, Madison Choo, a junior at Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest, as the soloist. She will perform Vincenzo Bellini’s Concerto for Oboe.

Madison said she used her HWS scholarship for lessons with her private teacher to further her music education.
“I’m extremely honored to be the recipient of this scholarship. I’m also very excited for my first-ever performance where I’m playing as a soloist. I hope everyone enjoys it,” she said. She has been practicing her solo since early July.

“Come dance the night away with the Hanover Wind Symphony and our fall program ‘Dance On’! We hope you savor the energy and excitement of the music behind so many different types of dances,” said Matthew Paterno of Parsippany, HWS music director and conductor.

Since beginning the oboe as a freshman, Madison has advanced quickly. She is enrolled in the pre-college program of Manhattan School of Music, where she plays with the Philharmonic Orchestra. She also performs with the Grammy-winning New York Youth Symphony and is a member of the New Jersey Region I Band.

The program will also include:

  • Danzón by Arturo Márquez
  • Four Scottish Dances by Malcolm Arnold
  • Havana Nights by Randall Standridge, conducted by Ayden Khan of Wayne, HWS associate music director

The Hanover Wind Symphony, one of only a few community-based adult wind bands in New Jersey, has performed for four decades, giving contemporary twists to traditional favorites. Its volunteer members aim to bring “music to people and people to music” through live performances and mentoring young musicians, including scholarship recipients like Madison.
