Hunterdon County celebrates ‘Older Americans Month’ in May

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of ‘Older Americans Month’ (OAM).

The County Board of Commissioners joined in the observation of OAM, and presented Meagan O’Reilly, Director for the Department of Human Services (DHS), with a proclamation in recognition of the countless contributions that older adults make to the community.

DHS Director O’Reilly said, “This year’s theme for Older American’s Month, Age Unbound could not be more fitting, it provides Human Services an opportunity to discover the many different experiences of older adults in Hunterdon County. We continue to welcome new members each month and I applaud our staff for their outreach efforts, and for their continued creativity to provide thoughtful engaging programs. We all benefit from older adults in our community, when they are able to stay engaged and connected.”

The Department of Human Services celebrates OAM, by offering various activities; Tech Talk Sessions, a Derby Hat Fashion Show, Dine and Chat events, Master Gardeners Talk, Bingo, various Music Performances, Low Vision Education Support Group, a Revolutionary War Lecture, and a monthly movie viewing in addition to regularly scheduled health and fitness classes.

Deputy Director, Jeff Kuhl said, “It is important to remember the countless contributions older residents make to our community. The recognition of Older American’s Month offers an opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and open discussions on how communities can combat ageing stereotypes, while promoting flexible thinking and examine how we all benefit when older adults remain engaged, independent, and included.”

One of the ways the DHS staff can learn about the needs of senior members in the community, is through participating in the annual, 2023 Needs Assessment, that can be found at: www.co.hunterdon.nj.us/495/Senior-Center. Complete the survey by May 30.

The division will review feedback received from this survey and present results to the community at a town hall meeting on June 15. The public hearing will be held in-person and via zoom in hybrid format.
